Student-Management

Do your buses have monitors onboard? If not, it can be a great - and cost effective - way of improving student safety during bus rides, as well as ensuring a smoother trip overall. Your drivers will appreciate the help, too!

Bus monitors can...

Improve Boarding and Departures

One of the main duties of bus monitors is to assist students getting on and off the bus, ensuring all students are well behaved and moving quickly. They can also help prevent any mistakes, such as students getting on the wrong bus at the end of a school day, by visually verifying all the passengers.

ID card scanning can also prevent mistakes, but it's always a good idea to have extra eyes on your riders as they come and go.

Maintain Discipline on the Road

Perhaps the hardest part of a bus driver's job is trying to drive the bus while also monitoring and disciplining students onboard. Having to split their attention is inherently dangerous, and stressful as well.

Monitors can take this burden off them completely, by being responsible for policing student behavior. If the monitor is ensuring the students are well-behaved, the driver can put 100% of their attention on providing the safest drive possible.

Assisting Special-Needs Students

If you have riders with special requirements, such as students in wheelchairs or those who need emotional support, a monitor is a real necessity. They can be trained specifically for the special-needs kids, and ensure all their needs are met throughout the ride.

This, too, takes burdens off your driver so that they can focus on safe driving.

Communicating with Parents

In some cases, bus monitors also take over communication duties. If a child is acting up on the bus, for example, a monitor is going to be in a better position to observe and report on their behavior. This also means drivers don't have to deal with the stress of handling angry parents, which can be a substantial problem for driver morale.

Emergency Evacuations

Finally, if there's an accident or something goes wrong, having a second adult onboard can make evacuations happen much more smoothly - and potentially prevent a tragedy.
