Of all the ways a student could potentially be harmed on a school bus, the most preventable is a child being left behind
on a bus at the depot. This seems like something that should never happen, but unfortunately, reports of overlooked kids happen every year. At best, this leads to disruptive lost-child searches. At worst, it can be genuinely dangerous for the child if they're young or the weather is poor.
Districts should be doing everything they can to ensure this never happens - including embracing child check systems that can prevent oversights.

How can your drivers prevent abandoned children?
1 - Two sets of eyes
Of course your driver should be personally inspecting the bus after each run, but mistakes happen, and children can be surprisingly good at tucking themselves away in hard-to-reach areas. It helps a lot to have a second person check the bus as well, or at least look inside via the back door for a clear view of the floor from the rear.
2 - Edge3
One great piece of student safety tech that we recommend is the Edge3 sensor array. In essence, it's a motion detector camera system combined with AI technology which is trained to distinguish between actual children and child-shaped objects like duffle bags. If there are any irregularities or signs of a child still onboard, it will alert you via electronic methods to check out the situation for yourself.
If new tech isn't in the budget, more basic motion detectors would do a similar job - although without the AI enhancement.
3 -Student ID Tracking
Systems that scan student IDs as they get on and off the bus can also be a big help. With student tracking tied to your bus management software, you'll have a direct record of every time a student gets on and off the bus. The system can also alert drivers if a child still shows as on the bus at the end of the route. So - for example - if a sleeping child accidentally misses their stop, the driver will know to check before leaving the bus. This further reduces the chances of students going overlooked.
