Technology is moving faster and faster, causing changes in virtually every industry - and that includes school bus transportation. After decades of only minor changes, we are now seeing a huge range of new tech and ideas making their way into bus systems, mostly for the better.

So what changes are in store in the next several years? These are the trends we think will keep causing waves.

How School Buses Will Change In The Future

1 - Electric Vehicles

At this point, it's become clear that the future of road transportation will be electric. Gasoline vehicles won't entirely go away for many years, but they are clearly in decline and there's no reason to think that will change. Schools will be increasingly looking to upgrade to electric buses as opportunities appear, which won't just be good for the environment. It's also good for schools, since e-buses are cheaper to own, operate, and maintain than traditional gas-guzzlers.

They're even safer than diesel buses to boot!

2 - Increased Routing Automation

One of the best ways for a school to reduce their transportation costs is to keep optimizing their bus routes. Modern routing software allows transportation administrators to experiment with a wide range of different routing solutions, with increasing AI-powered automation helping to locate optimal paths.

In a few years, we'll likely have software capable of automatically adjusting routes with minimal human input, such as handling new student transfers without requiring manual changes to the routes.

3 - More Use of Multi-Modal Transportation

Among districts struggling to keep their bus fleet running, or suffering from a lack of bus drivers, multi-mode transportation is already gaining in popularity. For example, a bus dropping off several students at one place, who are then delivered to their final destination in a van.

Even the recent 2025 National Congress on School Transportation is updating policies to adapt to growing usage of alternative vehicles.

4 - Increased Safety Measures

School buses are already incredibly safe, but they can always be safer. Expect more mandates for safety features such as seat belts, automatic fire suppression systems, and other technology intended to further reduce injuries or deaths in case of accident. Hopefully, they won't drive the price of buses up too much further.
