The Benefits for Students of Having Wi-Fi on School Buses

Written by Sonia Mastros | 11/4/25 6:00 PM

If you're looking for affordable school bus upgrades that could benefit everyone on the bus, adding Wi-Fi could be an excellent choice. Wi-Fi routers hooked into cellular connections don't cost that much, especially since the routers can be pretty basic. However, that investment can be a boon to students, improve bus safety, and potentially even help the community!

Why Is Wi-Fi on School Buses A Good Idea?

For such a simple upgrade, the benefits are wide-ranging:

1 - Homework and studying

For kids who have longer bus rides, the bus can be the perfect opportunity to get through some of their schoolwork without cutting into their evening free time. Wi-Fi makes this easier, especially as so much research - and even homework - is now done online.

2 - Low-income students

Onboard Wi-Fi could be particularly impactful for low-income students, who may not have the luxury of cell phone data plans. Providing Wi-Fi might allow them to do assignments or research that they wouldn't be able to do once they get home.

Much like free school lunches, free school Wi-Fi could significantly improve their outcomes, or even give them access when they don't have the Internet at home.

3 - Improved bus safety

Fundamentally, anything that encourages students to stay in their seats during a bus ride will inherently improve bus safety. Even if the students aren't studying, and are just using the Wi-Fi to watch TikTok, that still means they're remaining seated and relatively quiet.

If the students have something to keep themselves occupied, they'll be less likely to cause disruptions that distract the driver. Fewer distractions mean a safer ride.
